How Cyprus Businesses Get Found on Google and AI Assistants (SEO and GEO)
The short answer
To be found on Google and by AI assistants, a Cyprus business needs three things: a website search engines can read, clear pages that answer the questions customers ask (in Greek and English where relevant), and the same business details everywhere, including a Google Business Profile. SEO covers search results; GEO covers how AI assistants understand and cite you. Most of the groundwork is shared.
SEO and GEO in plain terms
SEO (search engine optimisation) improves how your pages appear when someone searches on Google or Bing. GEO (generative engine optimisation) helps AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity understand what your business does, where it operates and who it serves, so they can use your pages when answering a question.
They overlap heavily. Many AI assistants search the web before answering, so a page that is hard for Google to read is usually hard for them too.
A checklist for Cyprus businesses
- Make sure search engines can read your pages. Each page should load its main text without depending on scripts, have its own title and description, and work well on a phone.
- Publish a sitemap and check robots.txt. The sitemap lists your pages; robots.txt should not block the pages you want found. Some sites also add an llms.txt file, an emerging convention that summarises the site for AI tools. It is not guaranteed to be used.
- Set up Google Search Console. Verify your site, submit the sitemap, and use the Pages report to see what is actually indexed.
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile. Use the same name, phone number, address area and website as on your site.
- Answer real questions on dedicated pages. One page per service, written for the buyer: what it is, who it is for, how it works, what it costs or how pricing is decided.
- Put a short, direct answer near the top. A clear two or three sentence summary is easier for both readers and AI assistants to quote.
- Add structured data. Schema markup describes your organisation, services, articles and FAQs in a format machines read reliably. Keep it consistent with what the page shows.
- Cover Greek and English properly. Write each language for its readers and link the versions together so search engines know they are equivalents.
- Keep details consistent everywhere. Your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and Facebook should describe the business the same way.
What is different about the Cyprus market
Customers in Cyprus often search in both Greek and English, and sometimes mix the two. Local wording matters: people search for places such as Nicosia, Limassol, Larnaca and Paphos. Being specific about where you operate and which languages you serve helps both search engines and AI assistants match you to the right questions.
Common mistakes
- Every page using the same title and description
- Machine-translated Greek pages that read awkwardly
- Vague claims with no specifics, which give AI assistants nothing to cite
- Business details that differ between the website and the Google Business Profile
- Publishing many thin pages stuffed with keywords instead of a few useful ones
Doing it yourself or getting help
Much of the checklist can be done yourself, especially the Google Business Profile and Search Console. Help is useful when the website itself needs technical changes, when you need structured data, or when you need content planned in both languages.
We offer SEO and GEO for Cyprus businesses, either on its own for an existing website or together with a website or system we build. See also what a website costs in Cyprus. A Greek version of this guide is available here.
Frequently asked questions
What is GEO?
GEO (generative engine optimisation) is the work of making your business easy for AI assistants such as ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity to understand, so they can use your pages as a source when answering questions.
Is SEO still worth it if people use AI assistants?
Yes. Many AI assistants search the web before answering, so a site that search engines can read and trust is also the starting point for GEO.
Should a Cyprus business have pages in Greek and English?
If your customers search in both languages, yes. Write each version for its readers rather than relying on automatic translation, and link the two versions to each other.
How long does SEO take to show results?
There is no fixed timeline. After Google discovers a page it still has to crawl and assess it, which can take days or weeks, and rankings depend on competition and content quality.
Can anyone guarantee a top ranking or an AI mention?
No. Search engines and AI assistants decide what to show. Be cautious of anyone who promises guaranteed positions.
